Review of Springhill Suites, Virginia Beach, Virginia

The Springhill Suites in Virginia Beach, Virginia is clearly designed for both families on vacation who want a little extra room, as well as business travelers who might be visiting the area for more than one night. Like many Virginia Beach hotels, the Springhill Suites hotel is directly on the 3-mile expanse of Virginia Beach, so each room as a nice ocean-front balcony. The hotel is relatively close to the city's large convention center and makes a good option for conventioneers who want to relax as well as get their business done. What Do You Like on the Road?--A Business Traveler Survey

Are business travelers all the same? Probably not. But some interesting new research from Homewood Suites does reveal some of the similar traits and habits of business travelers. (Of course, as Homewood Suites is an extended stay hotel brand focused on both business travelers staying for a few days or traveling families looking for extra space, some of these findings may not be surprising--but they are interesting).

The results are from an online, external study conducted in May, 2010 for Homewood Suites. They polled 549 (why couldn't they ask one more person for an even 550?) extended stay travelers who had taken three or more trips in the previous twelve months for their thoughts on business and leisure travel.

Based on the results of this survey, it turns out that combining business and pleasure may happen more often than you think. For example, a combination of 67% of respondents replied that they frequently (or sometimes) combined a business trip with a leisure trip. According to a prior poll the company conducted in 2000, that's a 16% increase.

They also included a question that I'd like some of the expensive hotels I've stayed in to pay attention to--amenities. According to the survey, travelers identified free Internet access as their number one amenity. In this day and age, that certainly makes sense to me. I love when hotels offer free Internet, and I really detested it when they charge outrageous prices for it--even at upscale business hotels. I know it makes some business sense for them, because they can stick the extra charge to a traveler's employer, but it's just plain offensive, if you ask me. (Of course, we don't know all the other amenity choices that survey respondents were offered--but suffice it to say, I'm guessing that free Internet would come up ranking pretty high no matter what.)

Lastly (well, there were more questions, but this is all we're taking a look at), they asked extend-stay travelers if they maintained their dietary and fitness routines while away from home. Good question. Unfortunately, I know how I'd answer that question. I certainly try to, but frequently that try doesn't translate into actually doing. However, nearly three-quarters of the respondents said that maintaining diet and fitness regimens during trips was very important or important. (Perhaps it's that high because the question didn't ask if people actually do it or not, just whether it was important...)

Tips for Flying with a Toddler

When I told some co-workers that I was planning a four week vacation to South America - and I was bringing my 20 month old son - I was met with skepticism. An onslaught of questions soon followed. "Why on earth do you  want to put yourself through long flights with a toddler in a foreign land?" "What on earth will your toddler eat in Chile?" "Are you out of your mind?"

Trip planning consumed my free-time for a good month beforehand. This time, we weren't just flying to Grammy's house in New York; we were taking a (yikes) 12 hour flight to Santiago. I needed to be uber-prepared. I share with you the products of this resarch, including recommended parenting tricks and advice, as well as recommended travel-friendly products. Bon voyage.

Tips for flying with toddlers:

- Try to plan your flights around your toddler's normal sleeping times. Many international flights are late at night, which is a huge plus - they eventually fall asleep at midnight regardless of the excitement!

- Wear your toddler out beforehand. Run around the airport! No sitting allowed until they board the plane! Allow extra airport time for releasing energy before your flight's departure.

- Pack 3-4 healthy snacks in Ziploc bags. Pretzels, raisins and other dried fruit, crackers or cereal and granola bars work well. You never know how long you will be on the plane. I also packed a small bag of jelly beans (my toddler's all-time favorite, super special treat). Jelly beans can produce amazing results and changes of behavior. While I try my best to stay away from bribery, I'd rather treat my little one to a sweet than have them wake up an entire plane.

- Carry extra milk or formula. I was on a flight to Chicago once with my toddler and they only had creamer. Seriously. Horizon Organics makes a great product that doesn't need refrigeration.

- Pack extra diapers and two sets of clothes. If your destination climate is different, pack accordingly. Bring pajamas if you'll be on long flight. Toddlers really take their cue from routines - even if they won't be sleeping in a bed, putting on PJs will let them know it's sleepy time.

Tracking Flights

In my last post I highlighted a top ten list of travel applications for the iPhone. This time I wanted to highlight an additional application (for smartphones, iPhones, and the Web) that might be pretty handy for frequent airline travelers.

The application, called FlightView, allows airline travelers to easily track the status of flights and airports. It provides real-time information on delays and allows users to graphically see everything from a flight's progress to the number of airlines being delayed at a specific airport. You can save frequent itineraries for repeated use and view everything from baggage claim info to the weather.

One day tour in Yosemite

I planned to make a guided visit to Yosemite, and finally fulfilled my dream last December. So I could not help to express how much I have enjoyed my lass Yosemite tour on Sunday. Although I live in California over 20 years, never have been there before.

As the best-known scenic spot, Yosemite National Park is really wonder of nature. The Park is located in the Centre of the Nevada mountain range. There are big huge granite rocks waterfalls and spectacular valleys. In addition, these giant trees also become good scenery of this land of fantasy.Cliffs and crystal-clear waters give us the feeling of the naturaleza.Lleno ice and liquid water than Yosemite plain a fantastic world of water.

I really have to thank my tour guide, Tony. It is very informative and tell me a lot of interesting descriptions of these scenic. As I can I cannot drive a car, so the tourist guide is also my driver. I picked up at 8 o'clock in the morning. Actually he is a professional and experienced guide. Therefore tried everything to ensure that could have an interesting and relaxed tour. It may be that he knows everything in Yosemite. That was driving the car on the road, he maintained by telling me about of wildlife and the phenomenal landscapes on this earth extraordinaria.Tony even took me to a gas, where we had an unscheduled bathroom break station. It may be I should call him 'super man'.

As we were approaching the Park, I started to take fotos.Y I want to use my camera to memorize these grand landscapes. When we arrived at the Park, the temperature fell suddenly several degrees. Although Tony told me that implement costume hot before it got out, still felt quite cold.

Bridalveil fall was our first stop. You must be a good place in the summer. But I was not there in the hot season, so the cataract could not be considered as a great site in this cold winter.Still it took a photo of my foot in front of this fabulous cascada.Y then I went to my next parada.A first view of the master, which is the largest granite standing structure worldwide, knew why it was called 'The captain'. great scene had been dwarfed everything ahead of él.Aunque I used to see skyscrapers, I like the work of nature.

Top Ten Things You Should Know About Travel Insurance

When was the last time you knew in advance that you, a traveling companion, or a family member were going to get sick? When the last time you knew a storm was going to close the airport and stop all travel or you would  open the mailbox and find a summons for jury duty the day before your trip? Travel is expensive and it pays to spend a few dollars more to protect your travel investment.

1. Research insurance you already have. Many seniors are unaware that Medicare does not provide coverage anywhere outside the borders of the United States. If your personal health insurance does cover you, call customer service or visit their website out-of-area and international claims procedures. Many companies have an international claims form. Print it and claim procedures and take them with you on trips outside the U.S.

Some homeowner’s policies offer protection for baggage loss or theft. Some credit card providers offer medical benefits or include an accidental death benefit if you charge your trip on their card. Some credit card provider's offer buyer's protection on shopping purchases. It’s critical to know what insurance protection you do and do not have.

2. Medical travel insurance covers you in the event of illness or injury during your trip and, if necessary, for medical evacuation. In developing countries, medical care is limited and you may need medical evacuation to get adequate care. Medical evacuation costs $35,000 or more on average. Check policies carefully to understand criteria for determining the need for evacuation and how evacuation claims are handled.

Tips for Safe Air Travel by Plane

They say traveling by air is, by far, the safest way to go anywhere. This is true. There are far less deaths per year due to plane crashes than any by driving or riding in a motor vehicle. What is scary to most people  is that they are totally out of control of the situation when in a plane.

If you visit the National Safety Council’s Website, you can view your odds for dying in a multitude of different ways. It’s a bit morbid, I realize, but it really puts things into perspective regarding air travel related deaths. According to this site, there were 653 deaths in air and space travel in 2002, as apposed to 20,623 deaths in cars, trucks, and vans.

Crashes

Surviving a crash will depend greatly on where you are seated, where the plane crashes, and the height from which the plane falls. Sometimes there is just nothing you can do.

There are a few things you can do to up your chances of survival in case of a crash, however. The first is to fly non-stop when at all possible, as most crashes occur due to problems landing or taking off. Sit near an exit if possible, and know where the exits are in relation to your seat.

Know exactly how to disengage your seatbelt. Also take some time to read about the oxygen masks that fall in front of you in an emergency.

The most important thing to remember in the event of a crash landing is to get out as quickly as possible, but do not push, shove, or panic. Listen to instructions if they are being offered and leave your possessions behind. Your life, and your family are more important than anything else.

Injury

The following tips are geared towards helping you avoid injury to yourself or your fellow passengers in situations other than major plane crashes.

Turbulence is a common occurrence in air travel. Planes deal with turbulence much like cars on the road deal with wind. Just as a driver compensates when heavy gusts hit their car, a pilot compensates when they hit air pockets in the air. A plane coming down due to turbulence is almost unheard of, but it can cause injuries to passengers on the plane.
